“Content-Library” provides a range of digital materials for Japanese-language teachers to make better use of ひきだすにほんご Activate Your Japanese! in classroom activities.

ひきだすにほんごActivate Your Japanese! consists of three segments;

  • “Xuan Tackles Japan!”
  • “ONOMATOPOEIA -Share Feelings-”
  • “Welcome to My Japan!”

In the “Content-Library”, you can select and view the videos by each segment and download various digital materials that will boost your Japanese-language learning and teaching. The website is also full of features that come in handy when viewing/showing Activate Your Japanese! in your classroom.

Functions - How to best make use of this website

My List

Click on the “Add to my list” button shown below video player – the video will be added to your “My List”. You can view My List by selecting “View Videos” > “My List” from the top page menu.
The videos added to My List will be saved on the browser. Please note that if you do not access the “Content Library” for a certain period of time (depending on the duration of the cookie of your browser), your My List may be reset.

Video Player

Multiple-language subtitles

You can show/hide and select the language of subtitles by clicking on “字幕” button shown on top right corner of the video player window.
Subtitles are provided in Japanese (With Kanji / Only Hiragana and Katakana), English, Indonesian, Spanish, Thai, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Vietnamese and Burmese. Select “字幕OFF” to hide the subtitles.

Please note that subtitles are provided for “Xuan Tackles Japan!” and “Welcome to My Japan!”, but not for “ONOMATOPOEIA -Share Feelings-”.

Video Speed

You can play the video faster or slower by selecting the speed from “x1.0” button on the bottom right corner of the video player window.
“x1.0” is the standard speed of the video. By selecting “x0.8”, you can play the video in slower speed. If you prefer to play the video faster, select “x1.2”, “x1.5” or “x1.8”.

Each segment is divided into several chapters by its content. You can jump to the next chapter by clicking on the “チャプター” button while playing the video.

Various Downloadable Materials

On “Downloadable Materials” page, you can download the scripts and vocabulary database for every episode of “Xuan Tackles Japan!”. Further volumes of the Commentary Notes on communication strategies will also be added in coming months.
Furthermore, digital materials useful for your classroom activities and language-learning – such as scripts of the conversation skits in “ONOMATOPOEIA -Share Feelings-” and a list-at-a-glance of the title and overview of every episode of all three segments – are available for download.

Features

You can search and watch the video by its segments. The length of the video varies by the segment – “Xuan Tackles Japan” lasts for approx. 9 minutes, “ONOMATOPOEIA” approx. 1 minute, and “Welcome to my Japan!” approx. 5 minutes.
On the Content-Library, you can watch webisode of “ONOMATOPOEIA” (1 episode) and “Welcome to my Japan!” (1 episode), in addition to the full broadcast episodes of “Xuan Tackles Japan!” (24 episodes), “ONOMATOPOEIA” (23 episodes) and “Welcome to my Japan!” (23 episodes).

My List

You can view the videos added to your My List. My List can be used without logging in, but please note that the List may be erased from your browser if you do not access the Content-Library website for a certain period of time.

  • Scripts for “Xuan Tackles Japan!” and “ONOMATOPOEIA -Share Feelings-”
    You can download scripts for every episode of “Xuan Tackles Japan!” and the conversation skits of “ONOMATOPOEIA -Share Feelings-”. The scripts for “Xuan” are available in Japanese and English, and “ONOMATOPOEIA” in Japanese.
  • Script search for “Xuan Tackles Japan!”
    You can download a file that allows you to easily search for lines from every drama episode by keywords.
  • Vocabulary database for “Xuan Tackles Japan!”
    You can download a database of vocabulary (nouns, adjectives and verbs) that are used in “Xuan Tackles Japan!”. The database also shows how many times each word is used throughout the show, as well as the sentence in which the word is used.
  • Commentary Note on Communication Strategy in “Xuan Tackles Japan!” (in Japanese only)
    For a deeper understanding of the communication strategies used by Xuan in each episode, Commentary Notes are available for download.

    A downloadable flyer image with character profiles and cast information. Please feel free to use them when introducing the program. Flyers can be downloaded in Japanese and English.

ひきだすにほんごActivate Your Japanese! began broadcasting in February 2022 by NHK WORLD-JAPAN. On NHK WORLD-JAPAN website, you can watch the 15-minute show as it is broadcast. Please click on “Watch the program” to visit the website.
The videos provided on NHK WORLD-JAPAN website and this website differ by the language of the audio and subtitles.
